In this exclusive interview, Joe shares his journey from humble beginnings to performing at the highly anticipated Que Chiste Comedy Festival in Seattle this September.
Discover how he found his voice in comedy, what inspires his material, and why the PNW has become a hub for diverse comedic talent. Whether you're a fan of stand-up or curious about the behind-the-scenes of a comedy career, Joe's story is sure to entertain and inspire!
So Joe, we all know and love you for your role here at Que Chiste, but let's talk about you. What inspired you to start your career in comedy?
Finding myself in a depression with no creative outlet, my wife encouraged me to try stand up (a once long past dream.)
I'm still depressed but at least I'm more funny.
How does your Latin heritage influence your comedy style and the themes you explore in your performances?
Being Latino in a predominantly "white" region, it just makes sense to point out the hilarity in our differences. I find the closer we examine our differences I find we're not so different, mexicans are just better seasoned.
What can audiences expect from your upcoming performance with Que Chiste in Seattle?
Simply, MAGIC! The amount of energy swelling around this event has me very excited and amped to show off in my home town and showcase that Latinos deserve a seat at the comedy table.
What are some of your favorite things to do in Seattle or the Pacific Northwest when you're not on stage?
Being outdoors. From the mountains to the ocean and everywhere in between, adventure is out there and I'm going to explore it all till I find Bigfoot. Unless there's a baseball game, then that's where you'll find me.
How do you see the comedy scene evolving in the Pacific Northwest, and what makes it unique compared to other regions you've performed in?
The PNW is such a creative area with unique people that should be more recognized as a comedy power house. However, lack of access to stages and venues choke the opportunity for true growth. Hopefully the positive spotlight Que Chiste Comedy Fest will bring to the area can be a catalyst for more comedy driven venues.
Can you share a memorable experience from one of your performances, especially one that resonated with a Latin audience?
December of 2023 Juan Forno and Michael Aguilera joined me in a Chicano comedy showcase, which we sold out! The response from the Latino community was overwhelming and incredibly supportive.
What advice would you give to aspiring comedians, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds?
Be authentically you, and speak your truth. Also work your material... work it work it and work it some more.
How do you incorporate current events and social issues into your comedy, especially those affecting the Latin community?
I like to hold a mirror to society call out the micro aggressions, and even the flat out racism. If you don't leave the show with a laugh and new perspective I've failed.
What are your thoughts on the growing diversity within the comedy industry, and how do you contribute to it?
I love the diversity! All of the shows I produce reflect a diverse line up of characters I think it makes for a better show that reaches more people.
What future projects or collaborations can your fans look forward to, particularly in the Pacific Northwest or within Latin communities?
You never know when a #Jokedaddy production will pop up so keep in touch so you don't miss the experience!.
